How To Stay Motivated During The Holidays
Enrolling in an online school and keeping yourself motivated under the normal pressures of life is hard enough. But staying motivated during the holidays when cookies, singing, family, shopping, and parties are added to the usual stresses of everyday life? That can be a tough one.
Take heart! It is possible. With just a little bit of effort on your part, you can not only stay motivated during the holidays, you can maybe even get a little bit ahead.
Check Out Your Syllabi
If you’re taking more than one class through an online school, chances are that by the time the holidays roll around, you’ll be behind in at least one of your courses – especially if you work as well and have a family to take care of. Get all of your syllabi together and see what, if anything, you need to make up and then check out the big projects that are coming up soon. Pick the ones that need the most preparatory work like reading or research, write down the goals of what you would like to accomplish over the holidays, and break it up into bite sized pieces that you will be able to handle in less than an hour each.
If you have a break between semesters, most likely you are already enrolled for the following semester. Most online schools offer access to their syllabi. Download yours and start at the beginning. There’s no need to get months ahead, but purchasing your books and looking them over, maybe starting the recommended reading, will serve to keep you in a school frame of mind so that it’s not such a shock when you return to normal life when the holiday vacation is over.
Make a List
Making lists is the best way to have a tangible view of what you would like to accomplish and what you have accomplished. List everything related to your online schooling that you would like to get done over the holidays.
Make a Schedule
The best way to make sure that you have time for all the things that you want to accomplish is to make a schedule. Find one online or use one provided by your online school and print it out.
First, map out all of the things that are non-negotiable – the days and times you work, flights out of town or airport pickups for relatives, parties for work and family, church celebrations, events for your children. When that’s done, take a look at any down time and fill it in with the things on your list.
Remember, certain things can be combined. Can you listen to language tapes while you work out or wrap presents? Can you read some supplemental books while on the airplane? If not, get yourself up 15 minutes early or stay up 15 minutes later each night and do just a little bit for your online school to stay motivated during the holidays.
Stick To It
Knowing what you want to do and actually doing it are two different things. Stick to your schedule and cross things off your list as you finish them, and you will keep yourself motivated during the holidays!
